How Characters Work in Battle
Battles run in turns. Your characters act from left to right across your team, and then the enemies take their turn. Speed doesn't decide the order, so where you place each character is what sets when it acts. Supports are usually placed in front and damage dealers at the back, so buffs and debuffs are in place before the damage dealers attack.
Skills come in two kinds. Active skills need your input on each turn, while passive skills switch on by themselves once their condition is met. Buffs raise your team's damage or protect it, and debuffs can lower an enemy's defense or damage, so cast buffs early in a fight and save debuffs for the toughest foes. Heal a character before it gets too low, since a late heal can let it get knocked out.
Auto-battle and 2x speed are there if you want to move faster, though manual control makes more sense in harder stages.
The Six Roles Explained
Each card has one of six roles, and the role shows what job that card does in a fight. Attackers are the main damage dealers. Defenders draw enemy attacks onto themselves, cut the damage they take and often hit back with counters, which keeps the rest of the team safe.
Enhancers buff the team, raising its damage and techniques. Debuffers weaken enemies by lowering their stats, defenses or abilities. Interferers disrupt enemies with effects like Stun, poison and provoke, which gives them real control over how a fight plays out. Healers keep the team standing by restoring HP and easing debuffs, and some also raise the team's damage.
Since each card has its own role, the same character can play a different job depending on which card you use. A balanced team usually mixes roles, with a Defender or Healer keeping the attackers standing.
Elements and Enemy Weaknesses
Every card has one of four elements: Blue, Red, Green or Yellow. Enemies can be weak or resistant to some of them, and the stage shows which elements each enemy is weak or resistant to before you start, so you can plan around them. Hitting an enemy with an element it's weak to deals more damage and drains its Break bar faster, which makes checking the matchup worth the few seconds it takes.
Character Cards and Combat Types
Many characters come in more than one card, and each card is its own version of that person. Two cards of the same character can fight in very different ways, so picking a card is really picking how that character plays. Expect the same name to show up more than once in your collection.
Each card also has a combat type, Physical, Cursed or Hybrid, which describes where its attacks come from. Physical cards rely on bodily attacks, Cursed cards rely on cursed energy, and Hybrid cards use both. It's one more detail worth checking when you compare two cards.
How to Level Up and Grade Characters
Characters level up with Character EXP Materials and JP. A character's maximum level depends on its grade, and grading is a separate track that raises that cap. You unlock grading nodes with Cursed Objects and JP, and each unlock raises the character's stats and max level. New grade levels are added to the game over time, so leveling alone eventually runs into a ceiling that grading is there to lift.
Duplicates and Limit Break
Duplicates raise a card's Limit Break level, which goes up to level 5. That makes it worth holding onto copies of the cards you plan to use most.
Recollection Bits and Skill Upgrades
Recollection Bits are equipment you attach to characters, and they give stat bonuses and skills. Skills can be leveled up too, using JP, which makes their effects stronger, so spend it first on the characters you rely on.
How to Get Characters
New characters come from gacha pulls. Cubes are the game's gacha currency, and you spend them on draws from the banners. Rarity runs from R to SSR, and higher-rarity characters start with more base stats. Rarity sets where a character starts, but the card decides how it plays, so check the card before you pull.
FAQ
Does leveling one card help the others?
Yes, through Character Rank. Using a character, sending it on Expeditions or leveling it up raises its Character Rank, and a higher rank boosts every card of that character. Certain Rank levels also reward you with Cubes.
What happens when one of my characters gets knocked out?
Your backup character takes its place, so the fight carries on. Keeping your characters healed before they fall is still the better plan.
Can I set up my lineup before a battle?
Yes. Before the battle starts you pick four main characters, one backup and the Recollection Bit each one equips. You can also add a support character borrowed from another player, up to three times a day.
