Vehicle missions turn Liberty City's service vehicles into optional timed activities. A Fire Truck, Ambulance, Taxi, or law-enforcement vehicle starts a different challenge, and each one contributes to 100% without blocking story progress.

Mission Type
Optional grind activities that begin inside matching service vehicles. Each uses its own objective, progress rule, failure condition, and permanent reward.
How vehicle missions work
Enter the required vehicle and activate its mission to receive an objective and a timer. You can attempt these activities during the story or after finishing it, but earlier is often easier: gang hostility increases as the campaign advances, making stops and slow vehicles more vulnerable in some districts. Save beforehand and begin with a healthy vehicle whenever possible.
Targets and rewards
- Firefighter: Extinguish burning vehicles with the Fire Truck water cannon. The requirement is 20 fires on each island, and those fires do not need to be handled in one uninterrupted run. Finishing the island totals places a Flamethrower at every hideout.
- Paramedic: Collect patients and return them to the hospital before time expires. The Ambulance holds three patients, so later levels require careful grouping and multiple hospital trips. Reach level 12 for infinite sprint; rescuing 43 and 78 patients also adds Health and Adrenaline pickups to the hideouts.
- Taxi Driver: Pick up passengers and deliver them to marked destinations within the time limit. Fares accumulate toward the overall total, and reaching 100 unlocks the Borgnine cab at Borgnine Taxis in Harwood. A damaged Taxi can be repaired at Pay 'n' Spray before continuing.
- Vigilante: Pursue marked criminals in a law-enforcement vehicle. Targets become more dangerous as levels rise, and police can still chase Claude during the activity. Every 10 criminal kills on an island adds a Police Bribe to the hideouts, with another added at 20 kills on that island.
Preparation that saves failed runs
Learn the roads around the hospital before attempting the higher Paramedic levels, because the Ambulance is tall, fragile, and easy to roll. For Firefighter and Vigilante, work island by island so the location-based totals remain easy to track. Taxi Driver is more forgiving because its fares accumulate, but reckless collisions can still make a passenger flee.
Paramedic has the harshest reset: leaving or destroying the Ambulance, killing a patient, or otherwise failing sends the activity back to level 1. Vigilante also demands restraint. You have limited time outside a law-enforcement vehicle, and gaining a wanted level can turn a simple pursuit into Liberty City's usual multi-car argument.
FAQ
Are vehicle missions required to finish the Grand Theft Auto III story?
No. They are optional for story progress, but they are required for 100% and can be attempted after the main story.
When is the best time to attempt vehicle missions?
Earlier in the campaign is usually safer, especially on each newly opened island. Story progress can make local gangs hostile, adding gunfire and damaged vehicles to already timed objectives.
Do all Firefighter fires have to be handled in one run?
No. Firefighter progress is cumulative. Extinguish 20 fires on each island; they do not have to be consecutive.
What happens if Paramedic fails?
The next attempt starts again at level 1. Leaving or destroying the Ambulance, killing a patient, or running out of time can end the attempt, so careful routing matters more than raw speed.
Do Taxi Driver fares need to be consecutive?
No. The 100-fare total is cumulative, so you can stop and continue in later sessions. Finishing the total unlocks the Borgnine cab in Harwood.
Does Vigilante stop the police from chasing Claude?
No. Vigilante does not give police immunity. A wanted level can interfere with the pursuit, and staying outside a law-enforcement vehicle for too long can end the mission.
