Niko Bellic
Niko Bellic is an Eastern European who previously fought in the Yugoslav Wars as part of a Fifteen Man Squad, possibly for Republika Srpska, although it is unclear which side he fought on. He is moved to Liberty City by promises of living the American Dream from his cousin Roman Bellic, but when his plans go sour, he turns to the seedy underworld of Liberty City to build his way to the top. Niko is a serious, calm, self-reflective character and possesses a deeper intellect and a strong moral guidance. He has been trained extensively in weapon use and hand-to-hand fighting skills.

Niko and the people closest to him
Niko arrives in Liberty City after Roman sells a generous version of the American Dream. Roman runs a small taxi business in Broker, lives in a tight apartment and owes money from gambling. Their bond drives the early story: Roman gives Niko a reason to stay while his problems keep introducing dangerous work. Mallorie Bardas connects the cousins to South Bohan through Manny Escuela and Elizabeta Torres. Little Jacob becomes a steady friend who can supply weapons as friendship grows. Brucie Kibbutz adds racing and vehicle work linked to Stevie who buys requested cars in Bohan. These ties matter outside cutscenes because they connect story to usable services.
Liberty City criminal layers
The underworld arrives in layers, each employer leading to a more powerful group. Keep neighborhood and family in mind:
- Broker Russian network: Vladimir Glebov gives Niko regular early work. Vlad answers to Mikhail Faustin, with Dimitri Rascalov and Ivan Bytchkov in the same structure.
- South Bohan: Manny presents as a community reformer while Elizabeta runs a major drug operation linked to Patrick McReary, Johnny Klebitz and others.
- North Holland: Dwayne Forge returns from prison to a changed world while Playboy X pushes cocaine and community image. Clarence Little runs another network from East Holland.
- McReary family: Patrick, Francis, Derrick, Gerald, Kate and Maureen tie police, organized crime, family loyalty, dating, kidnapping and the Bank of Liberty into one thread. Gordon Sargent and Michael Keane work alongside that criminal side.
- Alderney and Italian families: Jimmy Pegorino leads a declining family. Ray Boccino and Phil Bell are key operators, with Anthony Corrado as bodyguard. Jon Gravelli leads the stronger Gambetti family while Gracie Ancelotti links the Ancelottis to the diamond conflict.
- Government pressure: the United Liberty Paper contact pulls Niko into off-book jobs and plays rival groups against each other.
One job often creates trouble missions later because Niko is stepping into disputes that started before he arrived.
Friends, dates and optional encounters
Some relationships help beyond story scenes. Little Jacob can supply weapons. Carmen Ortiz can help when Niko is wounded. Kiki Jenkins can help with legal trouble and Alexandra Chilton can offer a clothing discount. Kate McReary and the woman first known as Michelle belong more directly to the main plot. Carmen, Kiki and Alexandra are met through dating services and each has different preferences and benefits.
Other people anchor optional street encounters around the city. Brian Meech, Hossan Ramzy, Mel, Pathos, Sara, Jeff Harlingford, Cherise Glover, Eddie Low, Marnie Allen and others show parts of Liberty City that major employers do not. Some can reappear depending on earlier choices.
Past and diamonds, spoiler aware
Niko did not come only for Roman. Darko Brevic and Florian Cravic link to his former military unit. Florian has rebuilt life as Bernie Crane while Niko continues searching for Darko. Ray Bulgarin employed Niko in Europe and blamed him after a smuggling ship sank.
Karen Daniels first appears as Michelle. That identity links to government work and helps bring Niko to the United Liberty Paper contact.
The stolen diamonds connect groups that otherwise seem separate. Ray Boccino, Isaac Roth, Johnny Klebitz, Gracie Ancelotti, Luis Fernando Lopez and Tony Prince become involved at different points. Johnny, Luis and Tony matter here because they take part in GTA IV events, even though Johnny and Luis lead their own episodes.
Scope
This covers the main Grand Theft Auto IV story and people who appear or matter within it. The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony add other viewpoints for Johnny, Luis, Tony and shared events, but episode-only material stays separate. GTA Online appearances are outside this scope.
