Armor is the gear your character wears in Grounded to take less damage from creatures and hazards. Your character has been shrunk down to the size of an insect, so even small threats can be dangerous. Armor comes in sets of three pieces (head, body and legs) and in single pieces that each do one special job. Your pet can wear its own attire too.

How Grounded Armor Protects You
Armor cuts damage in two steps. First, each armor piece adds a fixed defense number that is subtracted from every hit, so a weak bite may barely scratch you. Resistance then takes a percentage off whatever damage is left. Armor comes in tiers, and higher tiers give more defense, with body pieces usually carrying the most.
Armor can't make you untouchable, though. A small minimum share of every hit always gets through, no matter how much you wear, so armor softens damage rather than removing it.
Light, Medium and Heavy Armor Explained
Every armor set belongs to one of three weight classes, and the class decides how much damage you block and what fighting costs you. A full light set reduces incoming damage by about 10%, a medium set by about 20%, and a heavy set by about 30%. The price for that protection is stamina. Heavy armor raises the stamina cost of each swing, bow draw or staff cast by about 25%, medium by about 15%, and light by about 5%.
Choose the class based on how you fight. Light armor keeps stamina costs low, which suits players who attack often and don't want to run dry mid-fight. Heavy armor suits players who want to hold the front line and take hits for their team, even though it's the most tiring to use. Medium sits in between and is a sensible pick when you're not sure yet.
How Armor Sets and Single Pieces Work
Most armor sets come as three pieces: a head piece, a body piece and leg pieces. Each piece gives its own effect while you wear it. Wear all three from the same set and you unlock a set bonus, which a partial set won't give you. Set bonuses are where each set's personality shows, such as a stronger block, extra damage on a critical hit or faster stamina recovery.
Some armor is a single piece that does one job well. The Bubble Helmet lets you hold your breath longer underwater, Fin Flops speed up your swimming, and the Gas Mask protects you from gas. Termite Armor makes you immune to dust effects, so single pieces are worth a look once you know the problem you're solving.
Eyepatch is one to be careful with. It boosts the damage you deal, but it also leaves you more exposed to damage, so it suits players who are happy to trade safety for offense.
How to Get Armor in Grounded
Armor is crafted, so you need both its recipe and its materials. Recipes open as you analyze items at a computer, and analyzing also earns Raw Science, the currency you spend on advanced blueprints at BURG.L's Science Shop. Analyze everything new you find, since each item can open another recipe.
Materials match the armor's tier. Early sets use things like acorn shells, mite fuzz, grub hide and clover leaves, while mid-game sets call for silk rope, berry leather and koi fish scales. Later sets rely on pupa leather, lint rope and fire ant parts. Many materials come from the creature they're named after, such as ant parts from ants and mite fuzz from mites, so the bugs you hunt shape the armor you can make.
Some pieces unlock in other ways. The Aphid Slippers open after you analyze Raw Aphid Meat, and the Gas Mask opens after you analyze a Stinkbug Gas Sack or Weevil Nose. Once you have a piece, the Super Duper in the Oak Lab can copy it for Raw Science, so you don't have to gather the materials again.
How to Upgrade and Repair Armor
Every armor piece can be upgraded at a Smithing Station, whose recipe you buy from an ASL Terminal. Each upgrade raises defense and durability, and the steps are paid for with plating materials you craft. At a certain point you pick a path. The Sleek path adds a special effect tied to that set, while the Bulky path adds more defense and durability instead.
Armor also loses durability as it takes hits, so check it between fights. The Super Duper can restore a piece to full durability, which is handy after a rough fight.
Best Armor Sets for Each Playstyle
No single set is best everywhere, so match your armor to the job. Antlion gives strong protection against sizzling heat, which makes it the pick for the BBQ Spill and the Sandbox. For gas, the Gas Mask is the one to wear in places like the Haze Lab and Trash Heap. The Red Ant set helps you move through the Red Anthill, where red ants mostly ignore you.
Bee and Moth are the light options for ranged fighting. Pairing either with a Marksman's Cap rewards your bow critical hits with a burst of stamina, which keeps the shots coming.
In melee, Assassin's rewards critical hits, Fire Ant adds acid damage, Koi Scale rewards perfect blocks, and Black Ox boosts charged attacks. If stamina runs short, Grub and Spider help you recover faster, and Widow is the set to pick for poison.
For front-line fighting, Acorn is a solid early pick, Ladybug takes over in the mid-game with healing on block, and Roly Poly is the top choice later on. The Strategist sets (Red, Black and Fire) are built around calling in ant helpers, so they suit players who like having backup in a fight.
Pet Attire and How to Equip It
Pets can wear their own attire, which you put on at the Pet House. You'll find pet attire at the very end of the armor list in the crafting menu. There are four pieces: Lil Fire Helm, Lil Black Helm, Lil Red Helm and Lil Goggles. The helms are ant-themed, and each one needs its ant's head plus mite fuzz, while the goggles use grub hide.
The Fire and Black helms unlock when you analyze their ant parts, while the Red helm and the goggles unlock from a Mushroom Brick. Every piece raises your pet's defense and resistance, doubles its health and lifts its happiness. The happiness gain is cosmetic, so it won't change how your pet fights.
FAQ
What is the highest armor upgrade level in Grounded?
Armor tops out at level 9 at the Smithing Station, and New Game+ adds the stronger Yoking Station. Levels 1 to 5 use Brittle Plating, levels 6 and 7 use Sturdy Plating, and levels 8 and 9 use Supreme Plating.
Does pet attire protect my pet from status effects?
No. Pet attire adds defense, resistance and health, but it doesn't reduce damage from status effects such as the ones caused by stinkbugs and green shield bugs.
