How Valheim's Three Food Slots and Buffs Work
Eating a dish adds its health, stamina and eitr to your maximums for as long as the buff lasts. You can hold three different foods at once, and their values stack. Health regen per tick stacks too, so a stew with strong regen quietly saves you a lot of healing.
Buffs don't hold steady. They fade slowly at first, then drop fast near the end, so a dish close to the end of its timer gives only a fraction of what it did fresh. Once a food is partly digested, its icon flashes. That's your cue to eat the same dish again, which refreshes both strength and time. Until the icon flashes, the game won't let you eat that food a second time.
Which Three Foods to Eat for Bosses, Exploring and Magic in Valheim
Match the slots to the job. Boss fights want health. If you dodge instead of blocking, stamina matters more, and it matters just as much on a long mining or gathering trip, where you run, chop and haul all day. Eitr foods are for staff users, since staffs run on eitr.
A good default is two health dishes and one balanced dish with a long timer. Swap a health dish for a stamina dish when you're exploring instead of fighting. Cook from the newest biome tier you can reach, because each tier's best dishes usually outdo the last one's. Eat right before you summon a boss, not while you're crossing the map to the altar, since the buff is strongest fresh.
Where to Cook Each Valheim Dish
Raw meat goes on a Cooking Station, which needs a Campfire, Hearth or Hanging Brazier underneath it. The big meats (Lox, Serpent, Seeker, Bonemaw, Asksvin Tail, Moose and Volture) need an Iron Cooking Station instead. Soups, stews and jams go into a Cauldron, and the Cauldron's level decides what it can cook. You raise it by building a Spice Rack, Butcher's Table, Pots and Pans, Mortar and Pestle, Rolling Pins and Cutting Boards and a Smoker near it, up to level 7.
Pies and other baked dishes take two steps. Prep them at a Food Preparation Table, then bake the prepped item in a Stone Oven. Oat Milk comes from a Mead Ketill. For what each station costs to build, see crafting stations.
How Valheim Feasts Work and How to Make One
Feasts are the long-lasting dishes. Each one has ten servings, and every serving lasts 50 minutes, so anyone playing with you can eat from the same platter. You craft a feast at the Food Preparation Table from finished dishes and a spice you buy from The Bog Witch. Feasts must be placed with a Serving Tray, and once everyone has eaten, you remove the empty platter with that same tray. Every biome has its own feast, and they're balanced between health and stamina, so one makes a good third slot beside two health dishes.
Two Food Mistakes That Waste a Slot in Valheim
Berries and mushrooms take a full food slot, but they give only a sliver of what a cooked dish does. Keep them as ingredients once you can cook.
And don't pick by health alone. Two dishes with the same health can differ in regen per tick and in how long they last, and a longer timer means fewer refills mid-fight. Check all three before you commit.
FAQ
What is the best food for a boss fight in Valheim?
Deer Stew leads the Black Forest, Serpent Stew the Swamp, Wolf Skewer the Mountain and Lox Meat Pie the Plains. Misthare Supreme leads the Mistlands, Piquant Pie the Ashlands, and Meat In Bread and Seal Meat Soup share the top spot in the Deep North.
How do you get rid of food in Valheim?
Eat Bukeperries, Rotten Meat or Toadstool. Each one gives you Feeling sick, which stops your regen, slows you down and clears your active foods so you can swap in a different set. Do it somewhere safe, since the buffs you clear are gone for good.
Can you starve in Valheim?
No. Food only adds buffs on top of your base health and stamina. Skip it and you're weaker in a fight, but you won't starve.
Which Valheim foods give eitr?
Everything with eitr comes from the Mistlands onward. Stuffed Mushroom, Yggdrasil Porridge and Seeker Aspic start the list, the Ashlands add Sizzling Berry Broth, Sparkling Shroomshake and Marinated Greens, and the Deep North has the most. Meatballs and Poteitr, Oven Pancake and Fish Soup carry the highest eitr there. The feasts from the Mistlands up carry some too.
How do you stop food from burning in Valheim?
Take it off in time. A Stone Oven bakes a dish in about 50 seconds and turns it into Coal if it sits for 100 seconds. On a Cooking Station, food turns into Coal once it has been on the fire for twice its cook time.
What is the best stamina food in Valheim?
In the Deep North, Pancakes and Oatmeal tie for the lead, with Oat Milk, Kale Chips and Lingonberry Juice close behind. Before that, Roasted Crust Pie leads the Ashlands with Scorching Medley right behind, and Blood Pudding is the strongest stamina dish on the Plains.
