A fire attack does double damage to a Greydwarf and only a quarter to a Charred Warrior. Poison does nothing to a Draugr, but a Cultist takes extra. In Valheim the right damage type beats a bigger weapon, so it's worth knowing what's waiting before you walk in.

How Weak Spots and Resistances Change Your Damage
Every creature reacts to each damage type in its own way. A weak spot multiplies damage by 1.5 or 2. A resistance halves it, or cuts it to a quarter when it's severe, and immune takes it to zero. Health is the value for a creature with no stars.
Spirit damage is a niche tool. Most creatures are immune to it, and the ones that take extra are ghosts, wraiths, bats, the Charred and the Fallen, plus Vile and Lord Reto.
Where Fire Works Best and the Creatures It Can't Touch
Greydwarfs and Greylings take double damage from fire, and Bears, Necks, Skeletons and Abominations take extra. Drakes, Fenrings and Lox do too, so fire stays useful past the Meadows and Black Forest.
Know the exceptions before you light something up. Surtlings, Leeches and Cultists are immune to fire, and Draugr only take half. The Charred in the Ashlands take a quarter. Lava Blobs and Bonemaw don't burn at all.
Why Poison Is Wasted on Most of the Swamp
Draugr, Skeletons, Abominations, Blobs, Wraiths and Ghosts are all immune to poison, and that covers most of the Swamp. Only Cultists and Ulvs take extra from it, and both live in the Frost Caves on the Mountain. Save your poison for the Mountain.
Blunt Damage for Blobs, Oozers and Pulp
Anything made of ooze, tar or pulp takes extra from blunt damage. That covers Blobs, Oozers, Growths, Lava Blobs and the Deep North's pulp creatures. Blobs and Oozers also resist slashing, piercing and fire, so a sword or spear is the wrong tool for them. Hit them from range, since the poison cloud a Blob bursts into is the real danger.
Which Creatures You Can Tame and Breed
Boars, Wolves, Lox, Asksvin, Moose, Chickens and Hens can all be tamed. Boars take food from the ground, and you can start taming a Moose by throwing Lingonberries at a trapped one's feet. Tamed animals can breed, and the young are born already tame. Chickens hatch from an egg kept warm by a fire and grow into Hens.
Which Mini-Bosses Are Worth Fighting
Brenna, Geirrhafa, Zil & Thungr and Lord Reto aren't Forsaken bosses, and nothing forces you to fight them. Each waits in a dungeon in its own biome, so each one is a fair test of whether your gear matches where you are. Three of them drop one of Hildir's chests, and Lord Reto drops a Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment for the sub-quest that crafts the sword. The bosses page covers the Forsaken fights you can't skip, and the weapons page lists the damage types your gear deals.
FAQ
What do stars on a creature mean in Valheim?
A star marks a stronger version of the same creature. A 1-star has double the base health, and a 2-star has triple.
Can you ride tamed animals in Valheim?
Yes. Lox, Asksvin and Moose can all be ridden once they're tamed.
Which Valheim creatures won't attack unless you hit them first?
Deer, Hares, Seals, Hens and Chickens are passive. The Dvergr are neutral, so leave them alone and they leave you alone. Hitting one can turn the neutral creatures nearby hostile too. The Bog Witch's Kvastur only fights back when attacked.
