Valheim Armor Stats and How Upgrades Work

Armor fills four slots: helmet, chest, legs and cape. Each piece adds its armor to your total, and that total cuts the damage you take. Weight, movement speed and the odd resistance decide which of two similar sets is actually better for you.

Upgrades are the other lever. Craft a piece at its crafting station, then upgrade it there one quality at a time. Each step raises its armor, and the station's level has to keep up. Most pieces top out at quality 4, Rag Armor stops at quality 2, and a few one-off pieces can't be upgraded at all.

Which Valheim Armor to Wear in Each Biome

Each Forsaken boss you beat opens the materials for the next tier, so work through the biomes in order. The sets in each tier trade protection, speed and bonuses in different ways.

Meadows: Rag Armor is what you start in. Deer Hide gets you Leather Armor, your first real upgrade.
Black Forest: Troll Leather and Bear never slow you down. Troll Leather carries the Sneaky bonus for stealth, and Bear's Berserk helps you recover fast. Bronze plate protects more, but its chest and legs cost you 5% speed.
Swamp: Root armor is built around its poison-resistant mask. Iron gives you 14 armor where Root gives 8, and its chest and legs cost you 5% speed.
Mountain: Wolf armor brings frost resistance on the chest and a lot of weight. Fenris goes the other way: its pieces add 3% movement speed, and its chest also resists frost.
Plains: Padded has the most armor in this tier, and its chest and legs cost you 5% speed. Lox Fur and Vilebone never slow you, and both earn their keep through set bonuses.
Mistlands: Carapace is heavy plate, and its chest and legs cost you 5% speed. Eitr-weave only makes sense if you cast, because it's built around Eitr regen.
Ashlands: Ask saves stamina, Embla is the mage pick and Flametal is the plate pick. Flametal's chest and greaves also resist heat.
Deep North: Vanguard, Caller and Protector are the sets for the last stretch. Their chest pieces all resist frost, Vanguard carries a bonus and Caller is the mage pick.

Valheim Set Bonuses Need the Whole Set

A set bonus switches on only when you wear every piece of its set at once. Swap one piece for something better and the bonus turns off, so pick the set first and upgrade within it. Mixing a plate piece into a light set costs you the bonus and adds a speed penalty, so it rarely pays off.

Berserk and Vilebone Wrath come with a catch: while they're on, physical hits hurt more. They reward players who dodge and recover fast, and they punish anyone who stands and trades blows.

How to Make Deep North Armor

Spoilers ahead for the Deep North.

Vanguard, Caller and Protector armor can't be crafted from materials alone. Each piece needs its own mould, and the moulds drop from Deep North creatures: Krigen drop the Vanguard and Protector moulds, and Hexen drop the Caller moulds. Take the mould and the piece's materials to a Black Forge (or a Galdr Table for the Caller pieces) to make a cast, then harden that cast in a Frost Foundry.

Mistakes That Waste Armor Materials

Upgrading Rag and Leather gear. You'll replace it within a biome or two, so spend the materials on the next set.
Walking into fire in Root or Feather gear. Root pieces and the Feather Cape are weak to fire, so swap them out before a fight with flames.

What is the best armor in Valheim?

Protector, once you reach the Deep North. Each piece gives 44 armor, the most of any full set, and none of the three slows you down. Before that, Flametal is the strongest set at 38 armor per piece, though its chest and greaves cost you 5% speed. If you'd rather have a bonus than raw armor, Vanguard and Ask both cut stamina costs.

Which armor resists frost in Valheim?
