Planet Zoo is a zoo-building game, and its DLC packs are optional add-ons you can buy on top of it. DLC, short for downloadable content, is extra material sold separately from the base game. Most packs add new animals and scenery, and some add scenarios too. You don't need any of them to play, so you can pick only the packs that suit the zoo you want to build.

What Planet Zoo DLC Packs Add to Your Zoo
Most packs center on a set of new animals, and the name often hints at the theme. The Aquatic Pack, for example, is built around water animals. Many packs also add scenery, which is the building pieces and decorations you use to dress up an enclosure. Even if animals are your main interest, scenery is worth a look, since a few pieces can change the feel of a whole zoo.
The Europe Pack shows what scenery can do. It brings canals, bridges, Swiss-style buildings and stained glass windows, so an enclosure can feel like a real place.
Some packs also add scenarios, which are set challenges with goals to meet. Not every pack is built around animals, either. The Deluxe Upgrade Pack on PC adds the Pygmy Hippopotamus, Thomson's Gazelle and Komodo Dragon, along with the game's soundtrack and desktop wallpapers.
How Free Updates and DLC Packs Work Together
Packs often launch alongside free updates, and those updates reach everyone who owns the base game. That means a feature can show up in your zoo even if you don't own the pack it's linked to. Walkthrough exhibits are a clear example. They're habitats guests can walk into, so they get close to the animals, and the feature came in a free update. The animals built for those exhibits do come from specific packs, though, so you'll need the pack for them.
How to Buy Planet Zoo DLC on PC
On PC, packs are sold on Steam, and each one can be bought on its own. Every pack requires the base game, so you'll need Planet Zoo before any of them will work. Since packs are sold separately, you can start with the one that fits your zoo. That includes the Southeast Asia Animal Pack and the Wetlands Animal Pack, which are both sold on their own on PC. Steam also sells bundled editions, but what each one includes changes over time, so check the store page before you buy.
How to Buy Planet Zoo DLC on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, you play the Console Edition and buy packs from your console's store. The console lineup is arranged differently from PC, so the same pack may be sold in a different way. Most packs can be bought one at a time, in paired bundles, or through a Season Pass.
The Southeast Asia and Wetlands packs aren't sold separately on console. You can only get them together, in the console Deluxe Upgrade Pack Bundle. The newest packs, Barnyard, Zookeepers, Americas and Asia, come in two bundles of their own, and those bundles sit outside the Season Pass. That means the Season Pass won't cover them, so look for those bundles directly.
Which Planet Zoo DLC Packs to Get First
Your first pick depends on what you enjoy most. If you like water life, the Aquatic Pack is worth a look first. It adds water animals such as penguins, otters and seals, plus below-ground viewing points where guests can watch animals both on and under the water.
If you want to see animals up close, look at the packs that supply walkthrough exhibits. The Twilight Pack brings the Egyptian Fruit Bat, the Grasslands Animal Pack brings butterflies, and the Tropical Pack brings the Brown-Throated Sloth.
The Europe Pack suits builders who want European-style scenery, and its badger can be watched resting underground in its burrow. If decorating is your main goal, pick a pack with a clear theme, like the Europe Pack, so its pieces fit together.
FAQ
Can console players get the Deluxe Upgrade Pack animals?
Yes. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the Pygmy Hippopotamus, Thomson's Gazelle and Komodo Dragon come as a pre-order bonus add-on. They aren't part of the console Deluxe Upgrade Pack Bundle, which holds the Southeast Asia and Wetlands packs.
When did Planet Zoo come to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
The console version, called the Console Edition, launched on March 26, 2024. It was built with several years of features, content and animals from the PC game's free updates, so much of that is already in it when you start.
Do I need the Aquatic Pack to use the underwater feeder?
No. The underwater feeder came in a free update for all players, so you don't need the Aquatic Pack to have it. Many of the animals that eat from it, such as penguins, otters, seals and caimans, do come from that pack.
