All 12 Radio Stations in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Updated on September 26, 2026 (27 days ago)

Chinatown Wars uses continuous instrumental mixes instead of the DJ chatter, adverts, and talk segments common in other GTA games. Its artist- and label-themed stations cover dub, electronic music, hip-hop, soul, rock, metal, Chinese folk, and other styles, with the available lineup depending on platform.

How the radio works

Vehicle radio in Chinatown Wars is deliberately compact. The stations do not use voice tracks, so you hear instrumental music without hosts interrupting the mix. On Nintendo DS, radio controls appear on the touch screen; the PDA also records listening preference with a zero-to-five-star rating based on how long you spend with each station. The stars measure play time, not objective quality.

Station brands advertised around Liberty City can cause confusion. Billboards may show radio names associated with Grand Theft Auto IV, but those broadcasts are not playable here. Chinatown Wars uses its own artist- and label-based soundtrack.

Available across releases

The core lineup spans several distinct sounds. Ticklah focuses on dub and reggae-inspired instrumentals. Deadmau5 covers electronic and progressive house, while Alchemist plays experimental hip-hop. Truth & Soul moves through jazz, soul, and funk, and Prairie Cartel mixes rock, electronica, and indie music.

These stations form the shared base across Nintendo DS, PSP, and mobile versions. Their names often match the artists, producers, bands, or labels supplying the music, so a name can describe both the station identity and the creative focus behind it.

PSP and mobile additions

The PSP and mobile releases expand the soundtrack beyond the shared base:

  • DJ Khalil plays funky hip-hop.
  • Tortoise focuses on post-rock.
  • Turntables on the Hudson plays worldbeat.
  • Anvil is the metal option.
  • Sinowav FM plays Chinese folk music.
  • DFA combines dance-punk, disco, and electronic music.

Do not assume these additions exist in the Nintendo DS version. If a station is missing there, it may be an edition difference rather than an unlock requirement.

Independence FM on mobile

Independence FM is the custom-music option on mobile rather than a normal preselected soundtrack. On iOS, the setup uses an iTunes playlist titled GTA, which the game can shuffle when Independence FM is selected. It does not belong to the Nintendo DS or PSP lineup, and it should not be confused with the separate GTA IV implementation that uses the same station name.

FAQ

Q.

Does the Nintendo DS version have the same radio as PSP and mobile?

No. Nintendo DS has the shared core soundtrack, while PSP and mobile add DJ Khalil, Tortoise, Turntables on the Hudson, Anvil, Sinowav FM, and DFA.

Q.

Do Chinatown Wars radio stations have DJs or talk shows?

No. The broadcasts use instrumental music without voice tracks, DJ chatter, adverts, or talk-radio programmes.

Q.

Which station plays metal?

Anvil is the metal station. It is available in the PSP and mobile releases, not the Nintendo DS version.

Q.

What is Independence FM in Chinatown Wars?

It is the mobile custom-music option. On iOS, a playlist titled GTA supplies the songs that Independence FM shuffles in-game.

Q.

What do the radio stars in the PDA mean?

The zero-to-five-star display reflects how much time you spend listening to a station. It is a preference tracker, not a review score or unlock rank.

Q.

Can I listen to the GTA IV stations shown on billboards?

No. Those station brands appear as environmental advertising, but Chinatown Wars uses its own playable radio lineup.
