NPCs are how The Forge organizes almost every important system without spelling it out too loudly. If you need a pickaxe, a potion, a reroll, a way to sell extra gear, a quest chain, an enhancement upgrade, a rune service, or a hidden progression trigger, there is usually one specific character tied to that job. The early-game cast already matters a lot.
