All 8 Origins and Bonuses in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

Updated on November 1, 2026 (3 days ago)

In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, an origin is your character's background, the life they lived before they took command of a starship as a Rogue Trader. It might be a career in the Imperial army, a life among the nobility, or a rise as a crime lord. You choose one when you build your character, and it shapes how they play from the very first hour. Each one points you toward a different style of play.

What Origins Do in Rogue Trader

Each origin gives your character a head start. It brings combat features, bonuses to stats and skills, and talents of its own, so the origin you pick shapes what your character is good at from the first fight. Those starting bonuses are the base the rest of the build grows from as you level up. Beyond the numbers, the origin also gives your character a backstory that colors how you play them through the whole campaign.

Which Origin Is Best in Rogue Trader?

You pick your origin when you create a custom character, before you choose an archetype. There isn't one best option, because none of the origins is really a bad pick. The better question is which playstyle you want, and it helps to decide that before looking at the stat bonuses, since those tend to suit specific builds.

Sanctioned Psyker and Commissar are the two origins that come up most often as the strongest picks, though opinions on the rest vary a lot. Playstyle decides the rest. Sanctioned Psyker is the obvious fit for a spellcaster and a poor one if you'd rather not play a mage-like character. Commissar suits someone who pushes allies to fight harder, and Astra Militarum Commander suits a leader who boosts the whole group.

Navy Officer is built for a front-line tank or melee fighter, while Noble works best when you're tied to one close ally. Crime Lord leans toward a character who mostly buffs themselves, and Ministorum Priest rewards a party built around Heroic Acts.

Can You Change Your Origin Later?

No. Your origin is locked in when you create the character. Later on, you can respec a character, which lets you pick their talents, skills and attributes again. The origin, the starting archetype and the background all stay the same through that process, so the origin you choose at the start is a permanent part of the character. It's worth choosing with the whole campaign in mind.

The Arbitrator Origin in Lex Imperialis

The Lex Imperialis expansion adds the Arbitrator origin, which draws on the Adeptus Arbites, the Imperium's law enforcers. It comes in three paths. Subductor is a melee fighter who uses shields to knock enemies down, Vigilant specializes in shotguns, and Castigator controls where enemies stand and weakens them.

The expansion also brings the Overseer archetype, a support role that fights with cybernetic familiars. Which familiar you get depends on your origin and archetype, and Arbitrators get the Cyber-Mastiff. If you want that familiar, Arbitrator is the origin that gets it.

FAQ

Q.

What is the difference between an origin and an archetype?

An origin is your character's background, while an archetype is the role they fill in combat. At creation you pick a starting archetype such as Warrior, Officer, Operative or Soldier, or the Bladedancer with the Void Shadows DLC. More advanced archetypes, such as the Overseer, come later as the character levels up.

Q.

Do companions have origins too?

Yes. Story companions such as Sister Argenta, Ulfar and Yrliet Lanaevyss come with origins tied to their own stories. You can't pick those for your own Lord Captain, since they belong to the companion.

Q.

Does the Sanctioned Psyker origin make psychic powers safer to use?

It does help. The origin reduces the chance of triggering psychic phenomena by 20%, which are the random side effects that can come with using powers. That may not sound like much, but it adds up over a long campaign where you use powers often.
