Grand Theft Auto 2 tells its story through Claude Speed's dealings with rival gangs across Anywhere City. District bosses provide jobs once Claude earns enough respect, while targets, associates, relatives, and people mentioned in records fill out a stranger and much larger criminal world than the brief phone conversations first suggest.

The Mentioned Characters section includes names recorded in game text and Hickmail. A name in that section does not mean the person appears as an on-screen character or has a confirmed mission role. Individual biographies and gang membership are left blank when the roster source does not establish them.

Claude Speed and the gang bosses

Claude Speed is the playable criminal in the main PC, PlayStation, and Dreamcast versions. He takes work from competing gangs, often weakening one faction to improve his standing with another. Each boss gives Claude a different nickname, including Gecko, Jumbo, Kosai, Rooster, THC-303, Comrade, and Grasshopper, but those names all refer to the same protagonist.

The bosses change as Claude moves through Anywhere City:

• Downtown District: Johnny Zoo leads the Yakuza, Trey Welsh runs the local Zaibatsu operation, and Elmo represents the Loonies.
• Residential District: Billy Bob Bean leads the Rednecks, Dr. LaBrat heads the SRS Scientists, and Red Valdez controls the Zaibatsu presence.
• Industrial District: Jerkov leads the Russian Mafia, Sunbeam speaks for the Hare Krishna, and Uno Carb commands the final Zaibatsu operation.

The Zaibatsu is the recurring organization, but its local boss changes with the district. Treat Trey Welsh, Red Valdez, and Uno Carb as distinct employers rather than alternate names for one person. A character's faction directly affects mission access because Respect determines which colored gang phones will offer work.

Why so many names barely appear

GTA 2 uses text, phone calls, police files, mission dialogue, and in-world correspondence to establish people who may never receive a portrait or a full scene. The long cluster around Billy Bob Bean includes relatives and contacts mentioned through his Hickmail inbox. Other names belong to police records, mission targets, kidnapped allies, traitors, technicians, or gang associates. A named person can therefore be part of Anywhere City's fiction without appearing as a conventional on-screen character.

This also explains why an affiliation-style detail may contain a boss followed immediately by a gang name. It is describing the person's connection, not suggesting that the two names form one title. The sparse presentation is very GTA 2: enough information to send Claude across town, rarely enough for a quiet character study.

Edition and promotional-film differences

The Game Boy Color adaptation replaces Claude Speed with its own selectable protagonists. Those characters fill the same playable role rather than joining Claude in the story. Keep that platform difference separate when comparing names.

Claude's Scott Maslen detail refers to the actor who plays him in the live-action promotional short GTA 2: The Movie. Claude never speaks in the game, and the film's events and fate should not be treated as a literal ending to the playable campaign.
