Valor Mortis won't let you warp anywhere at first. Once you can, travel only takes you to Lanterns you've already lit, so every one you walk past without resting turns into a longer trek back later. Lanterns line the whole base campaign, from the opening battlefield to the last checkpoints.

What Valor Mortis Lanterns Do: Rest, Level Up and Swap Ambers
Resting at a Lantern refills your ammunition and healing, makes it your respawn point and opens the level-up menu, where you spend Catalysts on health, stamina, parry and more. Ambers go into their slots from that same menu, and you can swap them at any Lantern. A fresh find is a good reason to stop and try a different setup.
How to Unlock Fast Travel in Valor Mortis
Fast travel opens at the Abandoned Church, once you've done this in order:
- Beat General Lothaire in Chapter 2.
- Go inside the Abandoned Church and talk to James.
- Rest at the Lantern inside the church.
- Watch for the tutorial message that confirms fast travel is on.
From then on, open any Lantern's menu and you'll see a Travel option. Pick a region, then a Lantern you've already lit, and you're there.
Lanterns You Skip Won't Show Up on the Travel List
Only Lanterns you've found and rested at appear in the travel list. A Lantern you spotted and ran past isn't there, so if a region's list looks short, you missed one.
When to Warp Back to an Earlier Lantern
Warp back for side quests, for Ambers and upgrade materials you skipped, and for routes that needed an ability you didn't have yet. Poisoned areas need the Shield Transmutation, and some routes only open once you can grapple. When one of those abilities comes online, travel to the Lantern nearest the blocked spot instead of walking. Some side quests have to be started or finished back at their location, so a warp back can save a long walk.
Rest Before a Boss, Not After the Fight Starts
Many boss fights have a Lantern close by, and that's the one to use. Rest there, spend the Catalysts you're carrying and set your Ambers before you walk in. Catalysts drop where you fall, so a stack you haven't spent is the thing a bad fight can cost you.
Spoiler: Late-Story Lanterns You Can't Warp To or From
Spoiler warning: the rest of this section covers late-story regions.
The Lanterns in Napoleon's Prison are rest and respawn points only. You can't warp to them, and you can't warp out of them, so once the story takes you there, there's no Lantern route back to earlier regions. Finish your side quests, pick up the upgrade materials you need and light every earlier Lantern before you move on.
FAQ
Do Lanterns respawn enemies in Valor Mortis?
Yes. Resting brings back the regular enemies you've already beaten, so a camp you cleared has to be cleared again. Bosses stay down. Rest when you're done with an area, not halfway through it.
Why does the Travel option disappear sometimes?
Some story sequences and boss encounters switch it off for a while. It's temporary, so finish the scene or the fight, then open the Lantern menu again.
Does fast travel cost Catalysts?
No. Travel needs no Catalysts and no special items, so warping back for a missed Amber or side quest costs you nothing extra.
