Duplication ingredients include the existing template. Applying a trim requires a separate armor piece and trim material. Acquisition describes a possible source, not a guaranteed reward.

Keep a template for duplication
Applying a trim consumes its template. A duplication recipe uses an existing template together with diamonds and the required block, producing two templates. Keep a spare if you want to repeat the pattern on more armor.
Pattern and material do different jobs
The template chooses the pattern. The trim material chooses its color. A trim does not increase armor protection, so choose your armor for its equipment properties before choosing the decoration.
Plan the acquisition method
Some templates come from structure chests or vault rewards. Others require archaeology or a mob drop. Check the acquisition method and your edition before collecting supplies.

Does an armor trim add protection?
No. The pattern is cosmetic and does not add armor protection.
Why should I duplicate a template before using it?
Applying the trim consumes the template. Keeping another template lets you make more copies.
