If you’ve been grinding in The Forge and set your sights on the Demonic Pickaxe, you should know it’s not just about having a powerful tool. Getting it takes effort, and it comes with some downsides that might make you rethink if it’s really worth it.
Here’s how to get the Demonic Pickaxe step by step
First, make sure you’re at least level 10 and have finished the tutorial quests. You’ll also need a portal tool to unlock the Forgotten Kingdom area. From the spawn point, head to the Ruined Caves entrance. You can run there or use the cannon to save time.
Once inside the Ruined Caves, turn right and go up the ramp to reach the Ashen Passage. Here, you’ll find the Magma Pickaxe lying in a hole near two basalt veins. Keep in mind, you need at least 78 mining damage to access this spot.
Next, move forward into the Volcanic Depths. This area is dangerous: enemies like Blazing Slimes and Elite Rogue Skeletons roam here. They’re tough but drop gold and runes if you defeat them.
From Ashen Passage, drop down through a hole (break any basalt veins blocking your way) into Volcanic Depths near the Amber area. Look for Demon Skal, who is located in a tunnel southeast on your compass. You’ll need to cross a lava pool and then turn right. Talk to Demon Skal and accept his quest.
Your mission is to mine Volcanic Rock nodes to collect 3 Demonite Ores. These ores don’t drop often, so using luck-boosting items will speed things up.
After collecting the ores, return to Demon Skal and turn in the quest. You’ll get the Demonite Key as a reward. Use this key on the ominous black locked door in Volcanic Depths to enter the Demonic Pickaxe Room, also called Demon’s Hideout.
What you get and what it costs
Inside the Demonic Pickaxe Room, you’ll find the pickaxe altar behind the locked door. The Demonic Pickaxe costs $500,000, and adding runes will cost about $150,000 more.
Here’s what the Demonic Pickaxe offers:
- 180 mining damage
- 51% luck boost
- 3 rune slots
- But it has a 10% mining speed penalty, which means it mines slower than other pickaxes.
Is the Demonic Pickaxe really the best choice?
Honestly, many players prefer the Arcane Pickaxe instead. It costs much less at $125,000, gives a similar 50% luck boost, and actually increases your mining speed by 10%. Plus, it’s easier to get by completing the Bard’s Guitar quest in Fallen Angel’s Cave at Stonewake’s Cross.
Another option is the Mythril Pickaxe. It costs $67,500, offers a 55% luck boost, but has lower mining power.
If you’re farming gold and runes in Volcanic Depths, killing mobs like the bomb guy helps you collect minor runes and gold. Using a lifesteal weapon is smart here because enemies like reapers can drain your health quickly. Note that there are no upgrades available for any pickaxe.
Quick comparison of pickaxes
Here’s a simple table to help you compare the main pickaxes:
| Pickaxe | Mining power (DMG) | Luck boost | Speed effect | Cost | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Demonic | 180 | 51% | -10% speed | $500,000 | Forgotten Kingdom (Volcanic Depths) |
| Arcane | 115 | 50% | +10% speed | $125,000 | Fallen Angel’s Cave (Stonewake’s Cross, Bard’s Guitar quest) |
| Mythril | 80 | 55% | Neutral | $67,500 | Miner Fred’s Shop |
What to keep in mind
The Demonic Pickaxe is a serious grind and costs a lot. Its slower mining speed makes it less practical than the Arcane Pickaxe for most players. If you want the best balance of power, speed, and cost during mid-game, the Arcane Pickaxe is usually the smarter pick.
But if you want to show off some rare gear and don’t mind the grind, the Demonic Pickaxe is a solid trophy.
